Our PE vision transcends physical fitness to develop character, leadership, and resilience through a high quality, competitive curriculum. We offer a broad range of activities that promote lifelong physical literacy and an understanding of the relationship between health and performance. Students are challenged to strive for excellence, demonstrate sportsmanship, and master the tactical complexities of both individual and team sports.

Physical Education Curriculum - Examination

Key Stage 4

At Key Stage 4, students have the opportunity to continue their passion for sport and physical activity by choosing either GCSE Physical Education or BTEC Sport. Both courses provide exciting and engaging pathways that develop students’ understanding of sport, fitness and performance, while equipping them with valuable skills for further education and future careers.

GCSE Physical Education combines practical performance with the study of sport science. Students develop their knowledge of anatomy and physiology, physical training, sports psychology, and socio-cultural influences on participation in sport. Alongside two written examinations, students are assessed on their ability to perform in a range of sports and activities (one team sport, one individual sport and one team or individual sport), making it an excellent choice for those who enjoy both practical sport and academic study.

BTEC Sport offers a more vocational approach, allowing students to explore the sports industry through a combination of coursework (Two coursework components of work) and externally assessed units (One written public exam in Year 11). Students investigate topics such as preparing participants to take part in sport and physical activity, taking part and improving other participants’ sporting performance and developing fitness to improve other participants’ performance in Sport and Physical Activity. This course is ideal for students who prefer a continuous assessment approach and are interested in pursuing careers in sport, coaching, fitness or leisure.

Both qualifications provide strong foundations for further study at post 16 level and support progression into a wide range of sport related careers.

Key Stage 5

At Key Stage 5, students have the opportunity to study A Level PE or BTEC Sport. These engaging and challenging courses provide students with a deeper understanding of sport, fitness and performance, while equipping them with the practical skills, theoretical knowledge and confidence required for progression to higher education and a wide range of career opportunities.

A Level PE is an academic qualification that focusses on the Physiological, Psychological and Socio-Cultural concepts in sport. Students develop an in-depth understanding of how the body and mind influence sporting performance and how sport impacts society. The course combines practical / EAPI assessment with two examinations in the first year of study and then three examinations in the second year.
