Physical Education - Core PE
Welcome to Physical Education!
As a Sports College, the PE department are passionate about sport! Our PE vision transcends physical fitness to develop character, leadership, and resilience through a high quality, competitive curriculum. We offer a broad range of activities that promote lifelong physical literacy and an understanding of the relationship between health and performance. Students are challenged to strive for excellence, demonstrate sportsmanship, and master the tactical complexities of both individual and team sports.
Physical Education Curriculum - Core PE
At Key Stage 3, students follow a broad and balanced curriculum in a wide range of team and individual sports. The focus in PE lessons is on mastery of skill so that pupils develop their technique, tactics and skilled performance. Pupils will build on the physical development and skills acquired in earlier key stages. They will become more competent, confident, and expert in their techniques, applying them across a variety of sports and physical activities. Pupils will learn to understand what makes a performance effective and how to apply these principles to their own and others’ work. The curriculum aims to foster the confidence and interest necessary for pupils to engage in exercise, sports, and physical activity beyond school and into adult life, with a clear understanding of the long-term health benefits.
The curriculum is structured to ensure that all pupils:
- Develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities.
- Are physically active for sustained periods of time.
- Engage in competitive sports and activities.
- Lead healthy, active lives.
Sports covered include; Football, Climbing/ Orienteering, Rugby, Table Tennis, Handball, Theory (Components of fitness, Methods of training and Basic First Aid theory and application), Cricket, Athletics, Physical movement (Dance / Gymnastics), American Football and inter tutor competitions.
At Key Stage 4, students build on the skills, knowledge and confidence developed throughout Key Stage 3 by taking part in a broad and challenging range of physical activities. Our curriculum is designed to develop personal fitness, improve performance, and encourage students to lead active and healthy lifestyles both in and beyond school. Through these activities, students develop and apply a range of tactics and strategies to overcome opponents in both team and individual sports. They refine their technical performance, improve decision making, and learn how to work effectively as part of a team. The Key Stage 4 curriculum also encourages students to evaluate their own performances, identify strengths and areas for development, and set personal goals to achieve their best. A strong emphasis is placed on resilience, leadership, communication, and sportsmanship, helping students develop skills that are valuable both on and off the field. We actively encourage students to continue participating in sport and physical activity outside of school through local clubs, community links, and recreational opportunities, promoting lifelong engagement in healthy and active lifestyles. Our aim is for every student to leave Key Stage 4 with the confidence, knowledge, and motivation to enjoy physical activity and understand the importance of maintaining their physical and mental wellbeing.
Sports covered include; Football, Basketball, Handball, Cricket, Softball, Table Tennis, Fitness and inter tutor competitions.
At Key Stage 5, we believe that physical activity should remain an important part of students’ lives beyond compulsory education. As part of our Key Stage 5 enrichment programme, all Year 12 and Year 13 students participate in one leisure lesson per fortnight, designed to promote enjoyment, wellbeing and lifelong participation in sport and physical activity.
Students can choose from a range of activities that best suit their interests and goals. Options include Football, Fitness, or Multisport (activities such as Table Tennis, Badminton, Basketball, Handball, Volleyball and Dodgeball).
These sessions provide students with the chance to stay active, develop new skills, improve their physical and mental wellbeing, and enjoy sport. By offering choice and variety, we aim to foster positive attitudes towards physical activity and encourage students to lead healthy, active lifestyles long after they leave school.
