The Carshalton Boys Sixth Form Bursary Fund is designed to help and support any student who faces financial barriers to participation in education and training, such as costs of transport, food or equipment. Please note that any assistance awarded may not cover the full cost of these expenses.

Eligibility:  Eligible students must be under 19 on 31st August 2026. This scheme is divided into three parts:

Vulnerable Bursary

A bursary of up to £1,200 a year for young people in the following defined vulnerable groups:

• You are in or have recently left local authority care
• You are young person in receipt of Income Support (IS) or Universal Credit (UC) because you’re financially supporting yourself

• Disabled young people in receipt of Employment Support Allowance who also receives Disability Living Allowance (or Personal Independence Payments)

Discretionary Bursary

A bursary is available to Carshalton Boys students not eligible for the full Guaranteed Bursary who face financial barriers to participation in education. Requests for bursary assistance are individually assessed and dependent upon circumstances and include:

• Students who have successfully claimed Free School Meals in the current academic year (2026/27)
• Students whose household income is less than £25,000 (please note total household income includes Universal Credit)

Household income includes earnings after tax and National Insurance, benefits (e.g. Universal Credit, Working Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit), maintenance payments received, and income from self-employment, rental income or dividends.

Discretionary Bursary awards are calculated once the number of eligible applicants is known, following the September application deadline. Applications are grouped into income bands (A, B, C), and available funding is allocated proportionally across these bands — with a reserve retained for exceptional circumstances arising later in the year. Funding is limited, and in some years demand has meant the fund has been fully allocated before the end of the academic year. Because of this, we cannot guarantee a specific award amount in advance, and we strongly encourage early applications wherever possible.

Additional Help

Under exceptional circumstances, students who are not automatically eligible for an award can also apply for help with one-off course-related expenses (proof of income or hardship will be asked for). Applications for additional help will be considered on an individual basis and are dependent on available funds.

Evidence Required

To process your application, we will normally ask for:

• The most recent 3 months of payslips (or fewer if employment has recently started)
• Recent Universal Credit statements or benefit award notices (dated within the last 3 months)
• For self-employment, the most recent tax return and/or up-to-date accounts
• Evidence of vulnerable group status where applicable (e.g. care status, DLA/PIP award letters)

Applications cannot be processed until all requested documentation has been provided.

Conditions

All bursary payments will be directly linked to attendance, behaviour and academic commitment. The student must not have unauthorised absences or lateness from lessons or school.

How and When to Apply

Those students wishing to apply for bursary must complete the application form (link below) and submit it as soon as practicably possible in September 2026. Please be advised that we cannot process the application for bursary if the requested documentation is not provided. Please note that if your circumstances change after this date then you may still be able to apply for bursary.

The bursary must be applied for in both Year 12 and Year 13. Students awarded a bursary in Year 12 will need to reapply, or reconfirm their circumstances, at the start of Year 13.
