Remote Education Provision

Our Approach

Carshalton Boys Sports College is committed to making sure every pupil is on school site, every day. In-person attendance is always our preferred outcome, and remote education is never treated as an equal alternative to it. Remote education is only ever used as a short-term, last-resort measure, and always alongside a clear plan to bring the pupil back to school site as quickly as possible.

When We Use Remote Education

We consider remote education in two situations:

  • Whole-school or group disruption — for example, an emergency closure — where attendance in person isn't possible for a period of time.
  • Individual pupils who are unable to attend but are well enough to learn — for example, recovering from a short-term illness, an operation or injury, or in exceptional cases where attendance is affected by a special educational need, disability or mental health need.

Remote education for an individual pupil is only ever agreed with the school, parents/carers, the pupil, and — where relevant — a medical professional or the local authority. It is never used as a justification for sending a pupil home for disciplinary reasons; any such instance is a suspension, managed under our Behaviour Policy. However, where a pupil is suspended, they are expected to access their learning from home through EdClass for the duration of the suspension.

How We Deliver It: EdClass

Where remote education is agreed, or a pupil is suspended, learning is delivered through EdClass, our online learning provider. EdClass's curriculum is aligned as closely as possible with CBSC's own curriculum, giving pupils structured access to lessons, resources and assignments so they can keep up with their peers while off site. We make sure:

  • work is high quality, ambitious and set promptly;
  • provision is broadly equivalent to a pupil's normal timetable where possible;
  • staff maintain daily contact to check the pupil is safe and engaging; and
  • pupils with SEND, including those with an EHC plan, continue to receive the support they need.

Reintegration Comes First

Every period of remote education is paired with an individual reintegration plan, agreed with the pupil and their family. This sets a clear review date, identifies the support needed to ease the pupil back into school (such as a phased return or extra pastoral support), and names the staff member responsible for it. Remote education is kept under regular review and is never extended as a matter of convenience.

Attendance, Safeguarding and Data

Pupils accessing remote education are still recorded as absent in the register, in line with DfE and statutory attendance requirements. All remote education is delivered in line with our Child Protection and Safeguarding Policy, Online Safety Policy and Data Protection Policy, so pupils stay safe and their data is handled securely.
