Dear Parent or Carer,
With the summer holidays approaching and the number of swine flu cases in the region continuing to rise, I wanted to take this opportunity to share with you the advice we have been given by the NHS and Health Protection Agency about dealing with any cases of swine flu we may have in the school in the future.

‘Elliot was able to demonstrate a vast range of positive qualities during the trip. He was unfailingly upbeat and enthusiastic and did he's best to get others to be the same. This was particularly effective on the trek where his rendition of songs from the musicals was well-received. He worked extremely hard on the school project, responding to requests without question.'

You may be aware by now that Alleyn’s School in Dulwich is to be closed from Monday, 4 May for the remainder of the week following the confirmed diagnosis of influenza A type H1N1, swine flu, among 5 students. While there are no reported cases within our schools we are monitoring the situation very closely and if there are any developments you will be notified via the website, email and letter.

Congratulations to our sixth form team who, after overcoming Wilson’s in the local heats, have now won the regional Semi Final. Despite the snowy weather and the icy car park the team and their supporters made it to St Elphege’s in Wallington on Friday 6th February.

Staff have been described as increasingly effective and dedicated. Inspectors described a "noticeable positive and uplifting ethos, throughout the college".

In an effort to develop the student newspaper, it has been on sale to the student population for weekly stretches in the Cafe' for 10p. The creation of a real business plan and budget has added a new dimension to the project which has improved the quality of our production and really pushed the already amazing efforts of our excellent writing staff.
Work Experience 7th - 18th July 2008

At the end of Year 10 your son will undertake two weeks work experience. This will give him the opportunity to experience what the ‘World of Work' is like. Although July appears a long way off, parents and students need to be aware that it is during the next few weeks that most placements get taken as six other schools within the Borough are seeking placements at this time also.

Year 7 and Year 8 boys have been studying human rights. Year 8's are involved in campaigning Gordon Brown and the Commonwealth heads about conditions in Burma, while Year 7 boys are sending Childline postcards to Gordon Brown informing him how he should stop violence in young people's lives.

Year 12 Activity Day - Blacklands Farm

A large group of the 6th form were invited for a day out at Blacklands Farm, for ‘team bonding'. We were all asked to take part in a variety of different activities in which we could win points for our team. These included a mixture of high rope activities, abseiling and mentally challenging tasks.

Welcome back to a new school year. I was delighted to have so many year 12 students join us and I have been impressed with their positive attitude and commitment. Following my visiting some lessons I was encouraged to see all Year 12 working hard on their studies.
Year 11 Update

Year 11 have had a good start to their final year of compulsory education. All students have had their Target Minimum Grades for some4 time now for each subject currently being studied. Students need to understand that these are the minimum grades that they can achieve with a little hard work.

The year group have hit the ground running and entered the final two years of their schooling with an industrious approach. Our boys have realised that the content of every lesson is vital and that an excellent attitude towards learning is essential if they are to fulfil their potential.

It has been lovely to welcome back the boys into Year 9 after the summer break. I have been impressed by the new found maturity of many of the boys and their renewed focus and energy. At the end of Year 8 I was pleased to recognise some exceptional performances.

As half term approaches, I think that year 8 can look back on the past seven weeks with a collective satisfaction about what they have achieved. I have visited most if not all departments to look at the work the boys are doing and am seeing a generally high standard of maturity and effort in lessons. Well done boys!

How we Use Maps in Geography

On Friday 21st September we had the pleasure of Tom Brake's (the Democrat MP for Carshalton and Wallington) company as he observed the Year 7 Geographers discovering the world around them using the Ordnance Survey maps obtained free through the fantastic Maps for Schools initiative.

Prison No Way

On Tuesday 11h September Year 8 took part in a whole day PSHE event at school. The event was organised by a Trust called ‘Prison No Way', who have been working in schools delivering this workshop since 1995. The project was designed to further compliment the fields of learning offered at school.
